Pap Souleye Fall: BLUR NEGATIVE SPACES OR and DP
01 November – 29 December 2024
Marginal Utility is proud to present BLUR NEGATIVE SPACES OR and DP, a new installation by NYC-based artist Pap Souleye Fall.
My work aims to create ruptures between practices that tie worlds together, reimagining how black/queer people of the diaspora blur edges through transmedia and pop culture. I define my practice as presenting the tensions between living in western society and moving across cultures using plurality to reimagine, create potential, and bring forth new worlds. I work with the waste and discarded elements created by contemporary industry. Salvaged materials are a way I connect to an existing canon within African Contemporary Art. Working across mediums allows for the work and myself to remain undefinable, it is my stance to be in flux.
I want to take the aspect of my practice that leads to the production and finalization of the work and produce negative spaces that focus on what it means to be in practice and develop methodologies for a sustainable way to mitigate criticality and risk. Negative spaces are also full of depth and tend to hold much weight, leaving room for play and open spaces for new ideas to form.
