Jeanne Jaffe: Four Quartets

Marginal Utility is proud to present “Four Quartets”, an exhibition of new work by the Philadelphia based artist Jeanne Jaffe.
This exhibition is informed by T.S. Eliot’s book of poetry titled the “Four Quartet’s”. In these poems Eliot explores the experience of time, paradox, and liminal states. Eliot’s themes concerning timelessness, recurrence, stillness, and emptiness exposes a resonant space, rich in new possibilities, identities, and freedoms.
Although one could argue that we are each culturally and historically conditioned, there is also an immanent sub-layer to each of us that is beyond the grasp of temporal understanding and shared meaning. This space that is outside of the imaginary and the symbolic is always beyond the reach of our comprehension and our ability to assimilate contextual and cultural information. As Eliot states, “To be conscious is not to be in time”.
The interactive installation in the exhibition is based on a sense of the rhythm, time, and musicality found within Eliot’s poems.
